Nudgee Waterholes Historical Chronology


About 30,000 years ago   First Aboriginal people in region at Stradbroke Island (Wallen Wallen is about 20,000 years ago (as indicated by current archaelogical reports)
About 10,000 years ago Lower sea levels resulting from ice age
About 6,000 years ago Sea levels rise as ice ends and flood Moreton Bay
About 3,400 years ago Sea levels reach maximum height, covering Nudgee Waterhole area
1770 James Cook in Endeavour sails past Moreton Island
1799 Matthew Flinders in Norfolk explores Moreton Bay
1823 Thomas Pamphlet, John Finnegan and Richard Parsons shipwrecked on Moreton Island
1823 John Oxley lands at Redcliffe Point and looked after by local Aborigines
1825 Brisbane founded as penal settlement
1838 German mission established at Zion's Hill (Nundah) and abandoned 11 years later
1860 Last corroboree danced at Nudgee
1865 1865 Ownership of Nudgee lands transferred to Bishop O'Quinn
1866 1866 Toombul winery established by the Child's family
1869 St Vincent's orphanage established. In the 20th Century some Aboriginal children from the Stolen Generation were sent here.
1874 Nudgee provincial school opened
1881 Nudgee Waterholes site declared a temporary reserve for water
1870 1870 Reported corroboree held in Kedron Brook area
1897 The Queensland Aboriginals' Protection and Restriction of Sale of Opium Act established reserves and provides for the appointment of protectors.
Europeans are permitted to employ Aborigines but Chinese people are not.
c.1904 Nudgee Waterholes used as gravel reserve
1912 Cattle dip reserve established adjacent to the waterhole
1918 Nudgee Waterholes declared a recreation and water reserve
1922 Gravel reserve closed and bora ring fenced
1967 1967 The Commonwealth Referendum passes. This ends constitutional discrimination and all Aboriginal people are now counted in the national census.
1986 Nudgee Bora ring registered with the National Estate
2001 2001 Brisbane City Council undertakes rehabilitation of Nudgee Waterholes, and the Nudgee Indigenous Reference Group (NIRG) is formed
